Minister of Education Anders Adlercreutz will attend the 2024 Global Education Meeting (GEM) organised by UNESCO in Fortaleza, Brazil, on 31 October and 1 November 2024. Brazil is hosting the meeting as part of its G20 Presidency. The meeting will examine strategies needed to achieve the SDG4 Education 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and is expected to adopt the Fortaleza Declaration by the ministers. The Minister will also hold bilateral meetings with partner countries and international providers of funding for education.

The 2024 Global Education Meeting of Ministers, which will take stock of progress of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development towards Sustainable Development Goal 4, is one of the key UN meetings. The meeting will take stock of the decisions reached at the UN Summit of the Future in September 2024 and prepare for the UN World Summit on Social Development in 2025.

The meeting is expected to adopt the ministers’ declaration (Fortaleza Declaration) which emphasises, among other things, the need to strengthen the consideration of equity, gender equality, wellbeing and climate and environmental sustainability in all planning of education. Minister Adlercreutz will speak at the session on quality early childhood care and education and foundational learning for all.

- More measures are needed to resolve the global learning crisis. According to UNESCO, 250 million girls and boys are currently excluded from access to education across the globe.  In low-income and middle-income countries, 70% of 10-year-olds in low- and middle-income countries are unable to read. That’s why it’s important that we strengthen education, competence and research through global agendas,” says Minister of Education Anders Adlercreutz.

In connection with the meeting, Minister Adlercreutz will also hold bilateral discussions with partner countries, including ministers and deputy ministers from Brazil, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Ukraine, China and the United States. The Minister of Education of Peru, Rosendo Serna, will be signing a Memorandum of Understanding between Finland and Peru to deepen cooperation in the field of education. Minister Adlercreutz will meet international leaders from UNESCO, UNICEF and the World Bank.
